I see Mary for hair extensions and Michelle for hair color. I have had very bad prior experiences with my hair and once I came to Jeffrey Stein Salon my was been fantastic and in the best shape it has ever been in. I am so grateful for the professionalism care and kindness the salon staff as a whole has provided me. I will NOT go anywhere other than Jeffrey Stein Salon. They staff is simply lovley and so sweet. It’s been a game changer for me. Many thanks to the Jeffrey Stein Salon for being so kind to me and showing my hair the care it has needed all the time to flourish and finally be at its healthiest state of being!!!! :))

Worst haircut in my life. I went in asking for a blunt, chin-length bob, showing Ronald 10-15 pictures of likes/dislikes of short bob cuts (e.g., yes to blunt, no to tapering in back, length, etc.). After my coloring by a different stylist, Ronald proceeded to give me a 1990s Rachel cut -- hair almost to my shoulders, tapered/short in front (so damage already done when I realized), longer in back, and some curling/50s flipping out at the bottom. I was in such shock that I didn't confront him. It's not just not what I asked for - it's objectively an awful, dated haircut. Avoid Ronald at all costs. I'm sorry I paid but I didn't want to make a scene.

Michelle Frankel is a genius. She has been coloring my hair for 20 years and she is THE BEST. I have always been a blonde and she has enhanced that and given me the most beautiful highlights /lowlights in the world. I get complimented very where I go. This past appointment I wanted to try a change and we did a red glaze over my typical highlights and I am obsessed. Attached are pics of the blonde she does and the red. I’ve loved this salon and Michelle forever.
Oh also! More recently I’ve been getting my hair cut with Dorothy who is also a genius and takes such care and artistry. She helped me find the perfect bob and bangs to fit my face .

I’ve been going to Michelle for over 30 years… she’s the BEST!! Truly. Color… gorgeous. Warmth and caring… second to none! I walk out the door feeling beautiful. Always a great experience.

I keep hoping things will get better here as it is close to home but alas, this review.
I go to the hairdresser to feel good during the appointment and when I walk out, not to get diagnosed. Yet, every time I go here they insist in getting to the root of what they deem to be issues of mine. Does not matter if I just go for a wash and blow out, I still get comments like "wow you are really gray, did you turn young?". What do they want to accomplish with this? There is no blow dryer that can change my hair color so it only makes me feeling subpar. Other comments range from "Have you always have thin hair?" or "you have dandruff in this spot".
Don't need to pay money to feel bad but just want some pampering and feeling pretty, not as if there is something inheritedly wrong with me. Clearly, I won't be going back no matter how nice the host is.

Trish is amazing! She listened to exactly what I wanted and constantly checked in to make sure I was liking the length and layers. My haircut came out perfect!

This is not a good salon. Maybe one or two stylists are good but I cannot trust anyone I’ve seen there with a simple haircut, so I would never ever trust them with color.
I especially would not book with Ronald if you’d like to have your inspiration picture taken seriously. He cut off way more length than I was comfortable with, and did not give me the shape I wanted AT ALL. It was a good haircut overall but just not what I had asked for in any way.
Aside from that, the shampoo was lacking and my hair didn’t feel clean afterwards because there was no scrubbing or massaging at all. Also, Ronald commented that my hair is “oily” (I’ve never heard that before) so he opted to not use any product in my hair, not even heat protectant, before a 30min blowout.
Because there was no product in my hair and it’s a rainy day, my hair was frizzy and curling up by the time I got home so I had to style it again myself!! I’ve added my inspiration picture and a picture of my hair from a similar angle after I got home and styled it and you can see that it’s a COMPLETELY different style than what I asked for, even with me styling it different than the inspiration pic you can tell it’s not even close to what I wanted.
I am giving 2 stars simply because the front desk staff is very nice and accommodating, and the salon is comfortable and clean. Otherwise I’d give it 1 star.

Best experience coloring and styling my hair with Mary, she did an incredible job coloring my hair from a dyed black color to red without any damage at all! I know I found my favorite stylist and salon here, totally recommend her 🫶🏼

Though I’ve walked by this salon weekly for over ten years, today was my first visit. I should have become a client sooner because it was a wonderful experience! With Diana’s assistance, Frank gave me the most wonderful cut with layers and blowout. It truly was a transformation. (The before/after photos don’t lie.) I will definitely return soon!

I have been going to this salon (86th and Broadway) for over 20 years. They have grown plenty, because they are that good.
They have the regular cut and color, but they are experts and can give helpful decisions and listen to your concerns or thoughts/ideas.
One thing that is IMMENSELY specific is that they know how to do men who have long hair! My husband CANNOT go to a barber shop! I wish i had his hair, but that is beside the point. They take care to ask what he wants which he really only knows the length, but that is okay. They work to put layers where needed that will help his hair, etc.
He was introduced to them by me. Growing up, I lived in the area. Now, I am coming from west 190s on Broadway. But the salon is worth it.
Even before Covid, my husband's work hours do not let him leave early and go get a cut. I can call them ahead, and they will keep the salon open for us (within reason)! They truly go above and beyond.
I've also seen them do wigs, they look very real.
One last thing! I know, long review! Unfortunately, I have developed a dangerous allergy to frangrance. I have all my own products. When I went recently, they were totally open to it and didn't make feel weird about it. Everything went well. So if this doesn't convince to at least TRY the salon, I don't know what will!

Tim did an amazing job! Really listened to what I wanted and nailed it! Great color, great cut, great conversations, and mimosas! Totally worth every penny. I moved here a year ago and finally found my stylist! Great salon and fabulous hairstylist!!!!

The best haircut I have ever had! I walked in on a whim and spoke with Luda, friendly and welcoming, and she matched with with Tiara, who was so kind and patient with me! After 2 kids and a busy Mom schedule, it had been 6 months since my last haircut and my fine, limp hair looked terrible. I wasn't even sure what I wanted so I just asked Tiara to make it look "nice." She went above and beyond. My hair looks thick and shiny, it has bounce and body, and I look about 10 years younger and more refreshed! She was so sweet and encouraging. I would recommend her to everyone and their mothers and daughters. In fact, my 5 year old daughter just told me I look beautiful, and I promised to take her to Tiara for her next haircut!
Everyone at Jeffrey Stein was friendly and welcoming, which doesn't always happen. I was immediately offered a beverage and encouraged to relax and enjoy. I also saw clients of every age and ethnicity getting fantastic haircuts, which really made me feel comfortable knowing that the all the stylists know every type of hair and can give many different types of cuts.
Love love love. I will be back for all my blowouts, cuts, and general haircare needs!

Jeffrey Stein 78 was truly the best experience I have ever had at a hair salon. Right upon entry, the receptionist and the other employees greeted me with bright smiles on their faces and took care of me right away. I originally went in for a blow out, but requested to get my hair curled when I got there and they were able to accommodate to me no problem.
They first shampooed and washed my hair and the products that they use are definitely the best of the best! My hair smelled so good.
Tiarra was the one who did my hair and she was so sweet and did such a wonderful job! I asked her for "VS Angel" curls and that is exactly what she gave me!
In addition to my hair, I was even able to get my make up done by Elina. She is very talented at what she does, I normally don't put on a full face of make up but she was able to gave me a look that was not over the top but still looked perfect for an evening out. Will definitely be back again.

Ai is the best! The salon is no-frills, but Ai's cuts are better than cuts I've had in high-end salons. I have fine, thin hair and she gives me cute short styles that flatter my face and style. I have been stopped on the street several times and asked where I get my hair cut, which has never happened in my life before Ai!
Go to Ai (she does my color too!) but don't steal my appointment times, please ;).

I would have chosen 0 stars for this place but unfortunately, that was not an option. I had bought a Groupon deal for haircut + double process. I called to book an appt and the woman said first, it would be a 3 month wait. Then, she explains to me that a double process just means they strip your hair of color. But you pay extra to add color to it. Well, then where is the double part of "double process"? When I called back to give them the opportunity to explain she said I am just the receptionist and I don't make the rules. Then she said to talk to the manager, that she did not have time to listen to my complaints and to just call Groupon to get my money back. Of course she went on about how their salon is in the UES and not the LES so that double process in UES means just stripping your hair of color. But this was on the heels of her telling me she was just the receptionist and that she knew nothing about hair. I guess she can add not knowing anything about being a receptionist either since she was extremely rude & ended up hanging up on me!
Save your money, there are MUCH better places anywhere in NYC.

Terrible experience!! And I didn't even get my hair done!
I bought a Groupon for this place - $39 to get a cut, deep condition and blow. I can't even complain about my hair cut, but it never got cut!!
When I called to try and make an appointment, I let them know that I had purchased a Groupon.
Them: "Oh, I'll take your # down and someone will call you back in a hour".
Me: Why? Why can't I make my appt now?
Them: Because there's only one person that is servicing Groupon customers.
Ugh! There were hundreds of Groupons purchased for this deal! So I never got a call back. I call the salon the next day, tell them I have a Groupon, and they tell me the same thing - that I should leave my name and # and someone will call me back to schedule an appt. Well that evening I finally get a call back and the earliest appt I could schedule on a weekday after work was a month from when I called. I was very disappointed, but I took the appt.
So two days ago, I get a text mssg confirming my appt for the next day. I replied back and confirmed. The next morning, I get a courtesy call letting me know that my stylist called out sick that morning and that she'd call me back the following day to get it rescheduled. I asked if there was anyone else that would be able to cut it. Nope! Out of luck!
I'm not going there!! Neither should anyone else! They treat their Groupon customers like cattle. They should have put a cap on the # of deals that could have been sold if only ONE stylist wasn't going to be servicing them. I had to wait a month to get an appt and that was within a week after purchasing the deal. I can't imagine what the wait time would be now...6 weeks after the deal was offered.
I called Groupon and asked for a refund. They told me how they've gotten more than one complaint about this place and they'd be happy to refund my $. Thank you Groupon! And I hope they do not allow this salon to offer any more deals that they can't handle!

My friend and I bought a groupon for the deep condition, wash, dry, and haircut package. Despite looking at the reviews for this place, we decided to give it a go.
It was a great experience. I brought in a picture of what I wanted, and Sean who was not only a great stylist, but also a great conversationalist discussed what would look best for my face structure. And off he went meticulously cutting my hair into a beautiful new do.
I also loved the deep conditioning, my hair feels so much softer.
I would love to go back, but its a little outside of my budget. Thanks for the pampering!

I bought a deep condition wash, dry, and hair cut package through living social (without looking at reviews of the place). When I went to book my appointment, I looked at reviews on yelp and a lot of them were terrible and I got nervous. But don't get scared from the first few reviews because 1. If you go through the filter ones, all of them are excellent and 2. My hair cut was very good, I seriously can't believe that people had such a bad experience here!
I used James D who was great! (I chose him based on reviews through yelp...THANKS YELP!) He knew what he was doing and was very friendly and gave me a great cut.
The reason why I'm not giving it 5 stars is because without the living social deal I can't afford this place. Maybe one day I'll be able to call Jeffrey Stein Salon my hair salon...
